Where Good Dogs Earn Their Badges

Doggy day care banner

We also offer a daycare service at our “day spa” where your dog will be exercised, entertained and educated. More than a standard daycare facility, our service is more akin to an adventure park/ school for your pooch.

Services

OUR APPROACH

At The Pampered Paw we provide a modern approach to dog daycare and have implemented the Daycare 2.0 approach developed by the Dog Gurus – Robin Bennet and Susan Briggs.

Where traditional dog daycare focusses on all-day play in groups of 30+ dogs with low staff to dog ratio, our approach provides more structure to the day by meeting your dog’s Nutritional, Occupational, Physical, Sensory and Social needs.

ACTIVITIES

Group play is held in smaller groups with a 1:8 staff ratio resulting in higher quality play, more interaction with staff and more fun for everyone. Dogs are rotated into groups that best fit their play style, energy level, exercise requirements or other factors. Staff become more involved in providing structured activities, such as training games and art projects, which are far more fun and engaging for all involved. Dogs learn how to settle down during rest time which helps overcome some of the potential issues with traditional day care including:

  • Overly-exhausted dogs
  • Some dogs being uncomfortable in large groups
  • Over-arousal which can lead to more aggression and increases the chance of injury

5 CORE NEEDS

Number 1 icon

nutritional

Encourages dogs to use natural foraging behaviours to earn food.

Snuffle mat
Lick mat
Kongs
Puzzle toys

Increased foraging behaviour may decrease unwanted behaviours such as excessive barking. It may also help increase physical activity, benefiting the animal’s overall condition.

Number 2 icon

Occupational

Gives dogs jobs that encourage physical & mental stimulation.

Obstacle course
Flirt pole
Fetch
Bubbles

Occupational enrichment helps keep dogs mentally stimulated, which combats boredom while also allowing them to release excess energy.

Number 3 icon

itinerary

Alter the complexity and quality of a dog’s space.

Swimming pool
Splash pools
Textured obstacle equipment

Provide outlets for positive expression of natural behaviours, and provide dogs with more control over their social and physical environment.

Number 4 icon

Sensory

Stimulate the sight, sound, & smell senses of dogs.

Sensory garden
Scent wall
Dig pit

Promotes calming behaviour and discourages negative behaviours like destruction or excessive barking.

Number 5 icon

Social

Positive contact between dogs and other species.

Small play groups with low dog to staff ratio
Supervised play with a vetted pack

A well-socialised dog will not become fearful, overstimulated, or aggressive when exposed to new people, dogs, places, or objects.

INITIAL APPOINTMENT

We vet all dogs attending The Pampered Paw giving you peace of mind.

Behavioural assessment

All first-time visitors to our daycare facility must enrol in and successfully pass a Behavioural Assessment. Behavioural Assessments are used to determine whether daycare is a right fit for your dog. During this assessment, we will be observing your dog’s human interaction responses; dog communication skills; body language; dog greeting behaviours and more. A behavioural assessment includes a full day of daycare. Owners are not required to be present.

Customers must first complete a temperament form. This form is assessed by our team and used to quickly rule out dogs that are human aggressive or dog aggressive. This form also provides the team with useful information about a dog’s level of socialisation, breed restrictions, age restrictions, and any health concerns.

During the Behavioural Assessment itself, our team will start by assessing whether your dog has any resource guarding behaviour (e.g. toy guarding or food guarding). They will then walk with your dog on a leash around an empty yard so they can get used to the smells and the environment. Once satisfied, the staff member will introduce an evaluator dog to help with the assessment. This dog is a regular Pampered Paw daycare attendee who is able to read dog communication with no risk of dog-reactivity. This dog has the personality to get along with any dog. The team member will assess the dog’s interaction with the evaluator dog and, if satisfied, will let the dog of leash to play in a small group of dogs. Once the team member is satisfied, the applicant dog will be able to play with their designated play group.

Daily Routine

We structure our day around industry best standards.

Play

A third of the day is dedicated to good ol’ fashioned play! Dogs will be split into multiple play groups based on their energy levels and play styles. This play is continuously monitored by our team with Red and Orange play behaviour corrected or redirected.

This includes time spent in our pool where weather permits.

Rest

A third of the day is spent resting in our rest areas. Rest is a vital component of our daycare and is required to keep arousal levels low, ensure the dogs can recover from their morning play, promotes a calm energy level and reduces the risk of incidents occurring. Just like us, tired dogs can get cranky!

Dogs will be placed in their own run, with a friend or with a family member depending on the dog.

Enrichment

A third of the day is dedicated to Enrichment. Enrichment can either be in the form of our Pampered Paw group training, or via our Enrichment add-on services.

The RSPCA states that Enrichment is essential for the physical and mental health of all dogs. Because of this, we have created our Pampered Paw Program to mentally engage our daycare attendees and have built a menu of Enrichment add-on services.

Report cards

At the end of the day, you will receive a report card detailing your pet’s day with us. This will include information on their demeanour throughout the day, any behaviour that needs to be corrected, an overview of their day, what Pampered Paw training they undertook andtheir grade for that training, along with any recommendations from the team and an behavioural concerns.

F.A.Q.s

Is my pet required to be vaccinated?

All dogs must have a current C5 vaccination, and be up to date with flea and tick protection.
C5 vaccination (ideally tick, flea & worming treatment as well) must be administered at least 14 days before the booking unless it’s a scheduled yearly re-vaccination (it takes 14 days for antibodies to become active).

All cats must have a current F3 vaccination, and be up to date with flea and tick protection.

Do you offer an inspection?

We currently only offer a limited viewing of our lodging to reduce any unnecessary stimulation (boarding) and by appointment only.

Inspections at the daycare are by appointment only during operating hours.

Do you offer a pick-up service?

Sorry, we do not offer a pick-up service.

What if my pet is not de-sexed?

At The Pampered Paw, we accept male dogs that are not de-sexed at all times. We do not accept female dogs that are not de-sexed when they are “in season” at time of boarding, all other times entire female dogs are accepted (this is due to a female dog in season causing general disturbance through-out kennels during this time).

What if my trip is delayed and I cannot collect my pet on time as arranged?

We ask that you email or Facebook message us as soon as possible to let us know of your delay. We in turn will keep your pet secure and comfortable until you are able to collect them. Any fees as a result of extension of boarding are payable in full on check-out of your pet (for extended delays of 3 days or more it is respectfully requested you settle these fees by discussing a payment over the phone).

What if I need to cancel my booking?

You can cancel your booking at any time with no penalty in low season by phone or by emailing us. We appreciate as much notice as possible as this allows us to offer the position to another pet. During peak times such as Easter and Christmas periods the deposit is non-refundable.

What if my pet is Human Aggressive or Declared Dangerous?

This facility has a policy of refusal for all Human Aggressive and Declared Dangerous pets.

What forms of payment are not accepted?

We accept all forms of payment (Visa, Mastercard and direct debit) aside from American Express.

We leave no bone unturned

Trust in us to take care of your best friend.
